Heymach, Chair of<b> <\/b>Thoracic Oncology, MD Anderson Cancer Center. Chairman of the Board, Joel Fineberg, described the Foundation goal: \u201cWe are on a <a href=\"https:\/\/happylungsproject.org\/mission\/\">mission<\/a> to change the pathway for those affected by <a href=\"https:\/\/happylungsproject.org\/about-ret\/\">RET positive non small-cell lung cancer<\/a> (NSCLC).\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>Activities will cover two main areas:<\/p>\r\n<p>1) Fund cutting-edge research\u00a0to:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>create novel testing methods and protocols for early lung cancer detection (to improve patient outcomes)<\/li>\r\n<li>develop targeted and individualized therapies (to utilize findings based on new testing and diagnostics)<\/li>\r\n<li>determine if existing pharmaceuticals can be repurposed or combined with other treatments (to provide effective, novel treatments)<\/li>\r\n<li>produce new immunotherapies (to be used in conjunction with existing treatments or as primary therapy)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>2) Advocate for:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>biomarker testing that is more accessible to more people<\/li>\r\n<li>educating patients and their families to seek early detection and treatment<\/li>\r\n<li>alerting the public to new clinical trials which could create the next generation of life saving treatments<\/li>\r\n<li>identifying and genetically sequencing tumor tissue to determine specific biomarkers.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>\u201cWe hope,&#8221; according to Fineberg, \u201cthat we can someday make the difference between life and death for RET positive lung cancer patients. Through the formation of The Happy Lungs Project, we will raise awareness about NSCLC, make early lung cancer detection more common, empower those living with RET positive lung cancer, and fund <a href=\"https:\/\/happylungsproject.org\/research\/\">critical research<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>The foundation&#8217;s scientific advisory board, led by Dr. Steven Artandi at the Stanford Cancer Institute and Dr. John V. Heymach, at MD Anderson Cancer Center, will help direct the Foundation\u2019s funds to support clinicians in their work toward a cure for RET-driven NSCLC.<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/happylungsproject.org\/donate\/\">Fund-raising efforts<\/a> have begun, along with lab research sponsored by The Happy Lungs Project.
